CNN —The Biden administration announced a new rule Friday expanding safeguards against potential discrimination of gay and transgender Americans seeking medical care, in a reversal of Trump-era limitations that nixed federal health protections for members of the LGBTQ+ community. In a set of expansive new rules unveiled by the Department of Health and Human Services, the department moved to advance civil rights protections for patients by barring health providers and insurers receiving federal funding from discriminating against those seeking care on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. The HHS rule restores Obama-era protections for transgender patients that the Trump administration rolled back in 2020 — a move that was condemned by LGBTQ+ advocacy and human rights organizations. The finalized rule comes as access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth has been tangled in political controversy, with more than 20 states in recent years attempting to restrict youth access to such care. The Biden administration in 2021 announced its intention to protect transgender Americans from health care discrimination through Section 1557 and Title IX regulations, citing a 2020 Supreme Court ruling that affirmed federal civil rights law bars discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender workers.

Apple needs to release GenAI services soon — or risk Nvidia overtaking it in value, analyst says. The prediction comes as Apple suffers a decline in iPhone sales in China. Apple is shifting its focus further towards generative AI after killing its electric car project. One key reason Apple may need to ramp up its generative AI efforts is because of iPhone sales headwinds. Leaders of the project reportedly said it nixed the car so employees on that team could instead work on generative AI.

Lawyers who voided Elon Musk's pay as excessive want $6 bln fee
  + stars: | 2024-03-02 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The lawyers who voided Elon Musk's $56 billion compensation as excessive on Friday sought a record a $6 billion legal fee, payable in the electric car maker's stock. Musk blasted the request as "criminal," posting on his X platform that "the lawyers who did nothing but damage Tesla want $6 billion." The company would pay the lawyers who represented Richard Tornetta, a shareholder who sued Musk in 2018 over the pay package, which a Delaware judge nixed in January. The electric vehicle maker is being asked to pay the fee because it benefited from the return of Musk's pay package, which the legal team said will result in the return to the carmaker of 266 million shares. Judge Kathaleen McCormick, who is overseeing the case and will decide on the fee, called Musk's pay "unfathomable" in her ruling.

Trump appeared in his Manhattan felony hush-money case, and learned his trial date remains March 25. Trump had asked to delay the March 25 trial, insisting through his lawyer that he was too busy campaigning and fighting his three other felony cases. Judge Juan Manuel Merchan is expected to rule whether the trial will begin as scheduled on March 25. Cohen sent his own $130,000, borrowed on a home equity line of credit, to Daniels to ensure she would not go public with her claim of an affair with Trump, prosecutors allege. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Former Illinois lawmaker and gubernatorial candidate William “Sam” McCann abruptly pleaded guilty on Thursday to nine felony counts of wire fraud, money laundering and tax evasion, halting his federal corruption trial over misusing up to $550,000 in campaign contributions. The seven counts of wire fraud and single count of money laundering each carry a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison. But a complex set of advisory guidelines before Lawless, who set sentencing for June 20, will likely yield a far shorter term. “Are you pleading guilty because you are in fact guilty?” Lawless asked. McCann's trial was repeatedly delayed.

LONDON (AP) — A lawyer for Prince Harry on Tuesday challenged the U.K. government’s decision to strip him of his security detail after he gave up his status as a working member of the royal family and moved to the United States. Harry, whose wife is biracial, cited what he said were racist attitudes and unbearable intrusions of the British media in his decision to leave the United Kingdom. Eadie also said there was a cost factor, because security funds aren’t unlimited. Harry said the committee unfairly nixed his security request without hearing from him personally and didn't disclose the panel’s composition, which he later learned included royal family staff. The case is one of five that Harry has pending in the High Court.

Walking your dog is a fantastic way to get in shape, and it benefits both you and your pooch. Biking, for example, is much easier for the human who is peddling than the dog that’s running. “I see people riding bikes with a dog, and the dog is gasping for breath and limping,” Tomasino said. “If another dog is coming at you, for example, that’s dangerous for you and the dog. “Exercising is really good bonding for you and your dog, as long as you stay off your phone,” Celapino said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is hosting the annual APEC summit of world leaders this week for the first time since 2011. But the main summit event will actually be on the sidelines: A face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The annual leaders' conference brings together heads of nations and other top economic and diplomatic leaders. That decision was regarded as a snub by some APEC leaders. Since then, the APEC leaders have posed together in batik shirts (Malaysia, 1998), Chinese jackets (Shanghai, 2001), flowing ponchos (Chile, 2004) and "ao dai” tunics (Vietnam, 2006.)

A European company has canceled plans to build blades for offshore wind turbines in coastal Virginia, the latest sign of struggle within the U.S.'s nascent industry. Dominion said its 176-turbine project will be the largest offshore wind farm under development in the U.S. The main appeal of offshore wind for supporters, including environmentalists and many state governments, is that it doesn't burn fossil fuels and therefore drive climate change. But opponents claim offshore wind is inherently unworkable without massive financial subsidies. But the costs of renewable energy — wind, solar, and other forms — have been declining, while becoming increasingly competitive, he said.

Opinion | The Road Back From Hell
  + stars: | 2023-11-08 | by ( Daniel Levy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +8 min
The nations opposing a cease-fire — Israel, the United States, some European countries and a few others — might acknowledge the perils looming. The United States would need to push for such an outcome, working alongside Qatar and regional states that have Israel’s ear. Revived Palestinian national political structures will be a critical component in advancing broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution after this war. The road back from the hell of a zero-sum “us or them” begins with the humanizing of the other. Maybe it’s a road that eventually leads us back to a two-state dispensation.

This is one of the concerns that has turned Instacart's IPO into a flop on its second day as a public company. To be successful, an IPO must deliver a big pop to the investors who signed on to buy stock when it debuts. He came out with an analysis of Instacart's business on Tuesday, valuing the company at $29 a share. The reason: The grocery business is low-margin, so there's not a lot of room for Instacart to skim more fees. "In short, the growth in online grocery sales will be higher than total grocery sales growth, but not overwhelmingly so."

Oil prices are surging again, but the Strategic Petroleum Reserve remains near 40-year lows. Last year, the Biden administration drained 180 million barrels from the SPR as oil prices soared. Flooding the market with all that supply helped bring oil prices down — and helped cool inflation, which had shot up as well. But while it has ticked up slightly, the level remains near 40-year lows at about 350 million barrels. The stock market has started to feel the ripple effects from rising oil prices.

The Secret to the Greenest Pesto
  + stars: | 2023-08-23 | by ( Eric Kim | More About Eric Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Until very recently, the Nickelodeon-green, almost teal pesto was a total mystery to me, a recipe I tried to replicate for years to no avail. But it’s the key to this dish, the most striking feature of an otherwise ordinary seafood pasta. But the pesto at Da Andrea is always shiny velvet, a shade of green that feels as if you’ve blended neon Chicago-dog relish into cream. Without the nuts, the pesto was pure basil, its floral aroma buoyed by an unbreakable emulsion of liquid and fat. If the pesto is the galaxy of this pasta, then the perfectly cooked seafood pieces are its brightest stars.

Lyft's app will now feature ads when a user is booking a ride and during the trip. Its main competitor, Uber, launched video ads on several of its apps back in June. "Lifestyle" is based on locations users "like to visit such as sports games, restaurants, gyms, etc," a spokesperson for Lyft told Insider in an email. All riders will see ads on the app, but they have the option to reject sharing "their behavioral and demographic data," the Lyft spokesperson said. Greenberger told the Journal that Lyft also intends on incorporating video ads on its app before year's end.

Triller's preliminary S-1 filing to go public on the New York Stock Exchange has been released. The company reported a smaller net loss in 2022 than in 2021 and around $48 million in 2022 revenue. In its S-1, the company featured images of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and DJ Khaled inside Triller products. One metric notably absent from Triller's S-1 is active user counts across its platforms.
